Symmtric tolerance is to determine the distance between the feature and datum center planes. Because the tolerance zone is a total width centered about the datum plane, as long as the controlled feature center planes is no farther from the datum center plane than one half the tolerance, the part conform to the symmetric specification.



Since the 1982 issue of ANSI Y14.5M. Dimension and tolerancing GD&T, symmetrical relationships have been controlled with Position tolerancing.
